Potential Effect of the Changing Urban Climate on Non-Communicable Diseases: A Case Study on Barasat City, India

Abstract Rapid land use change in urban areas creates a unique climate, which risks the health of its inhabitants. The climate is attributable to phenomenon recognized as Urban Heat Island (UHI). Under such circumstances, regions become hotter than their rural surroundings, creating an island higher temperatures. Human exposure excessively warm heat islands, particularly humid climates like India, becoming increasingly serious public issue. This paper briefly analyses formation surface islands (SUHI), identified by estimating Land Surface Temperature (LST) and also potential impacts on occurrence heat-related Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) within city. Barasat city India has been chosen demonstrate this work. LST estimated from Landsat data using remote sensing platform. It observed that high perfectly followed emitting shape descending order center suburban areas. A primary household survey was conducted 2018 month March-April, where 200 samples were collected. information collected regarding occupation, average hours zones, NCDs they have suffered from. found cramps, stress, strokes, respiratory diseases are common for people exposed zone. Although increase socioeconomic burden developing cities, NCD surveillance limited India. study will assist formulating better neighborhood considering city’s population UHI.
